However, Tatars as a group are important not only because they are peaceful Muslims, but also because they constitute the second most numerous nationality living in the Russian Federation after Russians. Scholars, practitioners, and policy makers should be able to draw lessons from Tatarstan applicable to other Muslim regions of the former Soviet Union and the world.
